Senators Block Landmark Freedom to Vote Act

Historic Legislation Fails to Pass Due to Filibuster Rules

Protecting Democracy and Voting Rights Thwarted

In a disappointing turn of events, the Freedom to Vote Act has been blocked from becoming law due to the refusal of two senators to change filibuster rules. This landmark legislation, hailed as the most important voting rights legislation in half a century, would have set national standards to protect voting access and strengthen American democracy.

The Freedom to Vote Act sought to address the growing threats to the integrity of our elections and the democratic process. It would have established baseline national standards to protect voting rights, making it harder for states to restrict access to the ballot and for partisan officials to interfere in elections.

Congress has the clear legal and constitutional power to pass the Freedom to Vote Act and strengthen our democracy. However, the filibuster rule, which requires 60 votes to pass most legislation in the Senate, has allowed a small minority of senators to obstruct important legislation that has the support of the majority of Americans.

By refusing to change filibuster rules, two senators have effectively silenced the voices of millions of Americans who are concerned about the future of our democracy. The Freedom to Vote Act would have protected the rights of all voters, regardless of their political affiliation or background. Its failure to pass is a setback for democracy and a reminder of the need for urgent reform.
